Private Zagreb walking tour itinerary
Zagreb walking tour starts with a meeting at your accommodation or at an arranged meeting point in the city center. Our walk will take us through the most important locations.
We start the tour at Ban Jelačić square next to a model of the city of Zagreb. Why here? We start the tour here because it makes it easier to visualize looking at the model that Zagreb was actually formed out of two separate settlements – Kaptol and Gradec. Here we will tell you all about the making of the city itself but also a few details on Croatian history too.
Just a short walk up the hill and you will be at Kaptol, right in front of the Cathedral. This church is a witness of turbulent times in Zagreb’s history. The story goes all the way from the 11th century. A proof of that is a mixture of architectural styles also inside the church. Here you will hear about a great earthquake which was the reason this church is now a neo-gothic beauty, a structure with two twin towers.
Right in front of the Cathedral, across the road, is hidden “the belly of Zagreb” Dolac – the most famous open-air market. Here you will have to buy something traditional from ‘’kumice’’ (local ladies that sell here).
From Dolac we pass Tkalčićeva Street – Zagreb’s most colorful street, a meeting point for young people of the city. Here we will join the buzz and see the vibrant side of the city.
From Tkalčićeva the Bloody bridge takes us to Radićeva street all the way to The Stone Gate – the only gate that remain standing from the Middle Ages with a chapel inside. Fully restored they stand in its beauty defy the modern days and times.
A steep street takes us right from the gate to the most important squares in Zagreb – St Mark’s square and church, center of political power in Croatia with the Governor’s palace and the Parliament. It is one of the well known “photo signatures” of Zagreb with the St Mark’s church and the colorful rooftop with the coat of arms of Zagreb city and Croatia.
Lotrščak Tower – is just down south. Passing by the Croatian Naive art museum and the one of a kind Broken relationship museum we come to the tower overlooking the Lower Zagreb. You can see here the shortest funicular in the world but also, if its noon you can witness the shooting of the Zagreb cannon.
Now you saw the Upper Town it’s time to go down and see what is the Lower Zagreb about. We will follow the Lenuzzi horseshoe right from the Croatian national theater, next to the Botanical garden to King Tomislav Square. This is a square dedicated to the first Croatian king who united all Croatian lands into one country. The statue of this king reigns also of this square. Another important building is the Main railway Station on the south of the square whose passengers, after arriving in Zagreb, have one of the most beautiful views of the city.
Just following the parks we go back north. Zrinjevac – the loveliest of the parks in the city center. It is now an elegant promenade with plane trees, fountains and busts of notable figures which brings us back to Ban Jelačić Square where we end tour. Again at central focus point of modern Zagreb. It was originally designed as a place where fairs could be held. It was named in the honor of Ban (Governor) Josip Jelačić. If you need a place to meet someone choose the most common places of all Zagrebians – ‘’under the clock’’ or ‘’under the horse’s tail’’.
