Opatija – Kvarner riviera

Opatija is the place where Croatian tourism begun. It all started in 1844 when Ignacio Scarpa, a wealthy merchant that was searching for a place where he could escape for a while and have a rest from his everyday life. He found such a place in a peaceful grove close to the church of St. James in Opatija where he built his summer residence and called it after his late wife Angiolina.

Rijeka – the heart of the Kvarner bay

Rijeka name in Croatian language means river. Rijeka is vibrant city oriented towards the future, with its roots in the past. It is the heart of the Kvarner region. As early as prehistoric times, the Celts linked five hills with a defensive wall on this favourable site between the mouth of the River Rječina and the Kvarner coast. Later, ancient Rijeka was conquered by the Romans, and then by the Franks under Charlemagne. In the Habsburg era, Rijeka, together with Trieste, was declared a free port, which was the beginning of a period in which the city bloomed.

Rijeka has many sights worth visiting, and a cosy stroll along the waterfront or the central Korzo pedestrian area with its boutiques and cafés makes one feel the diversity of the peoples who left their traces here and shaped the history of the city. Yet under the veil of history, modern life pulsates in Rijeka. The part of the city between St. Vitus’ Cathedral, the Rimski luk Roman portal, the city tower and the Austro-Hungarian Marine Academy is good for strolling and shopping. International brands are present as are small, cool boutiques and designers.

Trsat Castle

Mentioned for the first time in 799, Trsat is an ideal place for a walk, for having a coffee and sightseeing. Particularly the Trsat Castle which dates back to the prehistoric times when it was just a watchtower. Its present appearance is the merit of its last owner, Count Laval Nugent, who bought it in the first half of the 19th century, renovating it into a family mausoleum. View from the castle will leave you breathless.
